Vidyo Drives Interoperability of H.264 SVC Standard-Based Systems

May 12, 2011

Specification Defining How SVC Is To Be Carried In the Internet Is Published, Co-Authored By Vidyo Scientists

HACKENSACK, NJ, May 12, 2011 – Vidyo, Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced that two of its internationally renowned technologists, co-founder and chief scientist, Dr. Alexandros Eleftheriadis and Dr. Stephan Wenger, CTO of VidyoCast , the company’s broadcast division, were among the four co-authors of the “RTP payload format for Scalable Video Coding” specification that was published as RFC 6190 on May 7, 2011. The standard was developed by a group of experts in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and defines how SVC is to be carried in the Internet over RTP (the real-time protocol used for video and voice). It will be used wherever SVC real time video is transported over IP-based networks, and is considered to be the most significant document for ensuring interoperability of scalable video transmission next to the coding specification defined in the H.264 standard.

“Vidyo continues to make standards-essential technology available to the industry through the ITU-T, IETF, and UCIF, and plays a significant role in VCEG, JVT, and its successor, JCT-VC,” said Ofer Shapiro, Vidyo’s co-founder and CEO. “Vidyo has done more than any other company to breathe new life into the video conferencing and collaboration market, with award-winning technology and a totally unique approach to visual communication solutions. In 2010 we saw major companies adopt the SVC-based architecture. This makes SVC interoperability a key agenda item for many companies, to ensure market penetration and growth. RFC 6190 is an extremely important stepping stone in this direction.”

Dr. Eleftheriadis drives the technical vision and direction for Vidyo and also represents the company on standardization committees and technical advisory boards. He currently serves as chief editor of UCIF’s task group on Scalable Video Coding, working with the forum members to complete the last pieces required to achieve SVC interoperability. He has served as the Editor of the MPEG-4 Systems specification, co-editor of the H.264 SVC Conformance specification, has more than 100 publications and holds 16 patents in the US with 19 more pending. Dr. Eleftheriadis is a renowned visionary in video compression and communication technology, with several awards and inventions that are used in Blu-ray DVDs and digital television systems.

Dr. Stephan Wenger, CTO of VidyoCast, has been active in the field of media compression and transmission in different roles for over 20 years. He has been an active contributor in the IETF, ITU, 3GPP, and other standardization organizations with an emphasis on cross-layer optimizations, documented in more than 100 standardization contributions and Internet Drafts. He has been lead author of H.264 and H.264 SVC and other RTP payload formats for video. Dr. Wenger currently holds nine US patents with several more pending.

Vidyo’s solution was the recipient of the Wall Street Journal’s 2010 Technology Innovation Award, nudging out other formidable nominees to win the top honor in the publication’s “Network/Internet Technologies/Broadband” category, and was, this week, awarded Best of Interop in the category of Collaboration for its VidyoMobile product.
