Vidyo Continues to Drive Leadership of H.264 SVC Interoperability

Hackensack, NJ, November 15, 2010 – Vidyo, Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced that its co-founder and chief scientist, Dr. Alexandros Eleftheriadis, was voted Chief Editor of the Unified Communications Interoperability Forum’s (UCIF) Task Group on Scalable Video Coding (SVC) that will define H.264 SVC UCIF-compliant unified communication systems.  The UCIF is in the process of creating specifications that will increase interoperability between unified communication solutions from different vendors, as well as develop associated verification and certification programs.

“Alex’s appointment is just another example of Vidyo’s long term leadership in bringing standards and interoperability to H.264 SVC-based systems,” said Ofer Shapiro, co-founder and CEO of Vidyo.  “Vidyo has made standards-essential technology available to the industry through the ITU-T and IETF and will follow this strategy in the UCIF.  Vidyo has also played a significant role in the Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG).”

Dr. Eleftheriadis drives the technical vision and direction for Vidyo and also represents the company on standardization committees and technical advisory boards. He has served as the Editor of the MPEG-4 Systems specification, co-editor of the H.264 SVC Conformance specification, is co-editor of IETF’s RTP Payload Format for SVC, and has more than 100 publications and holds 16 patents in the US with 19 more pending.  Dr. Eleftheriadis is a renowned visionary in video compression and communication technology, with several awards and inventions that are used in Blu-ray DVDs and digital television systems, and an award-winning researcher.

Vidyo’s  SVC Technology Leadership Team:

Vidyo’s technology leadership team is second to none in the industry, and includes such world-known experts as Prof. Thomas Wiegand (Editor of the H.264/MPEG4-AVC video coding standard and its SVC extension, and Associate Chair of VCEG, JVT, and MPEG Video), Dr. M. Reha Civanlar (an IEEE fellow recognized for his contributions to video transport over communications networks, and a pioneer in scalable video coding), and other internationally renowned technologists. Vidyo has recently expanded its SVC and H.264 development team to include Dr. Stephan Wenger and Jill Boyce:

  • Dr. Stephan Wenger, CTO of VidyoCast, has been active in the field of media compression and transmission in different roles for over 20 years.  He has been an active contributor in the IETF, ITU, 3GPP, and other standardization organizations with an emphasis on cross-layer optimizations, documented in more than 100 standardization contributions and Internet Drafts.  He has been lead author of H.264 and H.264 SVC and other RTP payload formats for video.  Dr. Wenger currently holds five US patents with several more pending.
  • Jill Boyce, Director of Algorithms, has over 20 years of experience in video compression and transmission. She is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, and is an active contributor to the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and SVC standards.  She was among the Joint Video Team experts awarded the 2008 Primetime Emmy Engineering Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in August 2008, for the development of the H.264/AVC High Profile.  Her achievements include 58 US patents, 32 contributions to international standards bodies, and 41 papers in peer-reviewed conferences and journals.  She formerly led the Technicolor Princeton Research Center.

Vidyo’s solution was recently the recipient of the Wall Street Journal’s 2010 Technology Innovation Award, nudging out other formidable nominees to win the top honor in the publication’s “Network/Internet Technologies/Broadband” category.

Vidyo is the first in a new generation of software solutions that reduces the cost of telepresence from dollars to cents per minute.  Vidyo leverages SVC, enabling a video stream to be layered to deliver multiple resolutions, quality levels and bit rates. VidyoTechnology™ eliminates the central component of legacy video conferencing—the Multipoint Control Unit (MCU)—and replaces it with a distributed architecture using an application layer router. Based on the patented VidyoRouter architecture, VidyoTechnology enables natural, high quality video to work over the Internet, LTE, 3G and 4G networks for a fraction of the cost. It delivers a level of video quality found only on high QoS and dedicated video networks. Vidyo leverages off-the-shelf Intel processing platforms across rooms systems, PC and Mac- based desktops and laptops, net books and soon smart phones and tablets, advancing the price to performance profile of its video conferencing solutions at the same pace as the PC world.

About Vidyo, Inc.

Vidyo, Inc. pioneered Personal Telepresence enabling natural, HD multi-point videoconferences on desktop computers and room systems, and VidyoCast, an affordable cloud-based broadcast solution. Vidyo’s patented VidyoRouter architecture delivers the only available H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) solution that eliminates an MCU while delivering the industry’s best error resilience  and lowest latency videoconferencing and broadcast solutions over the Internet. The company has been active in various standards bodies driving H.264 SVC interoperability since 2005. Learn more at vidyo.com or follow Vidyo on Twitter@Vidyo.
